How loot boxes and pay-to-win ruined sports video games – The Argonaut

It is no longer possible for a casual gamer to load up NBA2K, Madden or FIFA and enjoy a few matches online without breaking the bank.

In NBA2K22 MyTeam, a player can create a roster of multiple players from different teams and eras. They can do this by buying packs or buying cards from the auction house using virtual currency (VC). 2K is currently running its “End Game” promotion, which features the best cards since the game’s release. Although a player has a 100% chance of drawing a 95+ overall card, it appears that drawing an “End Game” card overall of 99 is next to impossible.

Gaming YouTuber Troydan had three streams in which he attempted to draw an “End Game” card. “I spent almost $10,000 just to shoot one,” Troydan said in a recent video.

That’s approximately 45,000,000 VC, or 454 10-pack boxes containing 50 cards. This would mean that the odds of drawing an “End Game” player are 1/22,700, or 0.004%. A YouTuber with multiple sponsors may be able to afford it, but it’s not affordable for casual gamers.

In addition to loot boxes, 2K basically has a pay-to-win system in its MyCareer mode. A player can reach a total of 99 by playing multiple 82-game seasons, gaining fans, and increasing the amount of VC they receive per game. They can also pay for the VC to be competitive online. Players can take their MyPlayer to 85 total before MyPoints (which are earned by playing both online and offline) kick in. It takes 190,500 VC to get to that point. From there, players will need to go through several MyPoint progression points to reach a total of 99, which takes another 130,200 VC to reach.

If a player wants to play 2v2, 3v3, or in the Rec right away, they will need to purchase VC. It costs $99.99 for 450,000 VC, which would allow a player to hit 99 with a few VC to spare, but would still need to go through MyPoint progression. This system forces players to spend several hours playing over several seasons or shell out a lot of money to play online with their friends.

Electronic Arts is just as bad, if not worse, than 2k when it comes to loot boxes. EA earned $1.62 billion from Madden and FIFA Ultimate Team in fiscal year 2021, according to their annual financial report. The purchasable form of FIFA currency is FIFA Points. The most FIFA Points that can be purchased in a single transaction is 12,000 for $99.99, which would give the buyer 10 Mega Packs (the largest pack available) representing 300 rare items. A player can also purchase four Ultimate Pack Plus packs guaranteeing 30 rare players (84+ total) per pack.

Madden’s best packs in recent months have been the “Ultimate Legends Fantasy” packs. The chance of getting a total of 88+ in ULF packs is 3.7%. These packs cost 2,000 points, which means a player can purchase six packs for $99.99. There are also over 91 global ULF packs for 1,500 points. While it may seem like the buyer should just buy all 91+ global packs, EA limits the amount of each type of pack that can be purchased.

Unlike NBA2K22, Madden 22’s career mode has no online functionality, meaning the only thing players really have to pay for are MUT packs.

The worst thing about loot boxes and pay-to-win in sports video games is that they can easily cause gambling addiction. There is no certainty what the player will receive when they open a pack . Opening an “End Game” pack in NBA2K22 does not guarantee an “End Game” player. Opening an “Ultimate Legends Fantasy” pack in Madden 22 does not guarantee an Ultimate Legend. EA and 2K understand that players will open packs until they get the card they want. They have also seen and heard the complaints, so they know what they are doing is wrong.

These companies beg children and drug addicts to make a profit. If a video game costs $60, it shouldn’t cost hundreds more to be enjoyable. It shouldn’t take someone $10,000 to draw a card that will mean absolutely nothing in two months.
