June 2022 PS Plus free games could set a bad precedent

The launch of PSMore Extra and Premium in North America are slated for tomorrow, June 13, and fans who upgrade will have a ton of new games to play alongside the free PS Plus games for June 2022. Extra alone gives them a huge library of PS4 and PS5 games, while Premium extends this even further with PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games. Not to mention that there are other bonuses on top of that.

The June 2022 PS Plus free games are the last list of games before they become Essential tier. Fans know that the PS Plus Essential tier will only be two games from now, according to Sony’s tier breakdown, and of course there could be more changes. What is concerning in this range, however, is perhaps not the least highly rated Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Strikerbut actually the headliner game: God of the war.

PS Plus has God of War free everywhere

Fans aren’t generally happy with the June 2022 PS Plus free games, if only because of the lowest-rated games, but God of the war is a little different. The title is incredibly popular, and with God of War: Ragnarok apparently released in November, going back to the title isn’t a bad idea. Except that it is also available everywhere else.

PS5 owners can access God of the war on the PS Plus collection, which means that the Essential level God of the war is most likely for PS4 owners. However, if these PS4 owners are just going to the Extra Intermediate Tier, one of the games they have access to is God of the war. This basically means that giving God of the war away as one of the free PS Plus games only appeals to those who have a PS4, PS Plus subscription, no intention of upgrading and those who don’t own it/never played it before.

It’s a strange situation, but what is concerning is whether this is a unique situation. If Sony uses essential tiers to essentially tease upgraded tiers, it could mean fans are getting free games that are already available on higher tiers at least once in a while. Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Soulsand other PS4/PS5 games are all on PS Plus Extra, and if free there, God of the war shows that they could possibly be distributed on PS Plus Essential. Not to mention the plethora of non-proprietary games, which are perhaps more likely to be offered at the Essential level. For those who don’t intend to upgrade, that’s probably a good thing, but for those who pay more and already have access to these games, it’s unlikely to go well.

They would have the same limited appeal then, especially if it was like Miles Morales To tease Spiderman 2the exit. It’s unlikely to happen that often, but it seems safe to say that every month Sony gives away a PS Plus Extra game on PS Plus Essential won’t be popular among those who subscribe to a higher tier. Whether that happens again remains to be seen, as it’s important that Essential doesn’t change its approach because of Extra and Premium, but ultimately fingers crossed that the July 2022 PS Plus free games are well received and more unique.

PS Plus Essential subscribers receive a handful of free games each month.
