While shows like “Wipeout” were certainly entertaining to watch, the fast-paced nature of racing through a quirky obstacle course never seemed too appealing to participate in directly.
However, reframing these slapstick antics with a cast of silly characters and in the format of a video game creates an experience that’s as fun to watch as it is to play.
Mediatonic’s 2020 hit ‘Fall Guys’, also known as ‘Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’, is a unique battle royale platformer, in which up to 60 players compete in a series of challenges chaotic and fanciful to receive the crown and be the last one standing.
The games on offer are easy to pick up and hard to master, giving new players immediate enjoyment while giving veterans a challenge to master.
The controls can be a little crazy and clunky, but that’s honestly a point in the game’s favour; doing something successfully is truly rewarding, and with the ragdoll physics and wacky appearances of playable characters, failing can often be fun enough not to sting too much.
However, the heart of the game is its online battle royale matches, which means it requires a proper internet connection to even play, but in exchange, it means players can hop on a game with virtually anyone. in the world.
“Fall Guys” even offers the ability to form parties with other players you’re friends with, even across multiple consoles, so you can compete in matches alongside your best friends and work together to get gold. .
While the focus is certainly on the number one objective, it’s saying something that this game is still a lot of fun no matter how hard you actually do it.
Every time I log in for a game or two with my friends, I’ve had a blast, even if I get knocked out in the first round. As a bonus, the game is currently free to download on all platforms; there’s a bit too much emphasis on microtransactions for my taste, but thankfully those are just cosmetic changes. The game itself can be fully enjoyed without paying a penny.
